'Sandkings': My Experimental Alien Breeding Simulation Game
Friday, 4th October 2024
'Sandkings' is something I've been working on for a while, with a little help from ChatGPT. It's a browser-based simulation game written in jQuery and using HTML5 canvas. The game invites players to become the guardians of an extraterrestrial insect colony, hatched from mysterious eggs discovered in Martian soil. Inspired partly by George R. R. Martin's novelette 'Sandkings' and an episode of 'The Outer Limits', this game puts players in charge of humanity's first attempt to nurture alien lifeforms on Earth.
The storyline begins with the unmanned Mars rover Ares-7 collecting soil samples from the red planet, which are then transported back to Earth. Upon close examination, scientists discover tiny, dormant alien eggs embedded within the soil. As the player, you are given the task of nurturing these eggs in a specially designed habitat, striving to cultivate a thriving colony of alien creatures.
Once in the habitat, players must manage environmental factors such as feeding and temperature to help the eggs hatch. Upon hatching, the creatures progress through multiple life stages—starting as eggs, then subterranean infants, and finally emerging as adult 'Sand Kings'. Throughout these stages, each alien has distinct characteristics, such as speed, strength, virility, and aggression, which can mutate as generations progress.
The gameplay involves maintaining optimal conditions for breeding, adjusting temperature to replicate Mars-like settings, and providing the right amount of food to sustain the growing colony. There are challenges along the way: competition among individuals may arise, with males sometimes fighting for dominance, and there are opportunities for successful mating, resulting in a new generation of hatchlings.
Every Sand King in the game has its own traits—ranging from strength and speed to aggression and life expectancy—that evolve over time. As a player, you can observe these traits by selecting individual specimens and studying their stats in the 'Specimen Examination' panel. The game even features rare occurrences, like the creation of a super-strong male with exceptionally high aggression or a fertile female "queen" capable of boosting the population quickly.
The dynamic environment also factors in the time of day, with day and night cycles affecting the visual aspects of the game and the behavior of the creatures. Players must navigate the complexities of feeding cycles, population management, and genetic mutations, keeping an eye on the balance of their colony to avoid extinction.
'Sandkings' is more than just a simple breeding game; it offers strategic depth, as players must balance the survival and growth of the colony amidst changing variables. The game includes a weekly log feature that summarises the colony's progress, such as population size, number of eggs laid, and the average traits of the adults. Players can compete against themselves to see if they can beat their own high scores in categories like generations survived and total eggs hatched.
With its mix of genetics, survival, and strategy, 'Sandkings' provides a unique window into an alien ecosystem—one that the player both creates and controls. If you've ever wondered what it might be like to be at the forefront of an extraterrestrial research project, this game is the perfect experimental playground for you.
Give 'Sandkings' a try and see if you have what it takes to breed and sustain your very own alien insect empire!
